Listen, there are several activities leading up and may cause an individual to have swollen ankles and/or feet. For example…

Have you or the person who suffers from swelling feet relate to any of the following?

  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • A recent trip on an airplane or automobile without much activity.
  • For some women on her Menstrual Cycle
  • A pregnancy — Attention: abnormal swelling could possible be a sign of a condition know as preeclampsia, this serious condition also know as toxemia, can include symptoms such as high blood pressure and increased swelling
  • Overweight
  • Elderly or not so young anymore.
  • An trauma or injury to the swollen leg causing leg edema.

I know I get leg swelling (edema) and stiffness after a long flight. I usually take my shoes off as soon
as I get settled in. Then wind up having to loosen up the laces when the plane lands. I
try to stand up at least ever couple of hours. Or at least move my heels up and down flexing
my calf muscles to stimulate a little blood flow.

Now listen close . . .Swollen toes, a swollen foot, enlarged feet, puffy feet and foot swelling may be a warning sign of a more serious illness.

Such as heart, kidney or liver failure. This is not the case most of the time. But make sure to
contact your physician should any condition or abnormal swelling persist.

Some additional causes of foot and ankle swelling can be:

* A blood blot in the lower leg
* An infection with from an open would or
injury

* Poor blood circulation
* Varicose veins
* Burns to include sunburns.
* Insect bites and/or stings
* Not following a proper diet
* Surgery to your leg or foot
* Poorly functioning lymph nodes or lymph node
blockage (lymphatic obstruction)
*Anti depressants and birth control pills have
also been know to cause swelling.

To help you out without having to run and call the doctor.

Here’s the most common types of home remedies you can perform on yourself to relieve some or all your discomfort.

  1. Lay down in a comfortable position with your feet elevated above your heart.
  2. Perform some for of exercise to get the blood pumping to your legs.
  3. Regularly wear support stockings (These can be purchased at your local drug or medical supply store. I highly recommend Smoothtoe brand socks.)
  4. Reduce your salt intake. Salt can cause the body to retain unwanted fluids causing swelling.

In most cases prevention can be the most beneficial.

Here are a Few Prevention Tips:

  • Whenever possible avoid standing, sitting or inactivity for extended periods of time.
  • During flight or travel get up and walk around if possible, stretch your legs, move your toes up and down, try to get a little blood flowing.
  • Try not to wear restrictive clothing for extended periods of time.
  • Exercise regularly and follow a low sodium diet.
  • These tips should help you better understand what causes feet swelling and how to treat it.
  • But make sure to follow up with your doctor right away if anything feels out of the ordinary, such as persistent swelling and discomfort.
